For homework tonight, Johnny did a math worksheet, found synonyms and antonyms for his spelling words ... and then he veered into the 21st century.
He checked his school e-mail account, where he found messages about math homework from his homeroom teacher, information about the Indus Valley Civilization from his social studies teacher, a link to an explanation of the sun halos they saw a few days ago from his science teacher, poetry from a friend who moved back to the States last year, and a YouTube link from a friend in his class.
Next he worked on a slide show he's preparing for a social studies project on the Indus Valley Civilization. All the students at AISC have gmail accounts and use Google docs and Google drive to work on projects and share information with their teachers and other students. I did nothing like this in the 4th grade.
Johnny filled his nightly reading requirement by helping Evie read through her kindergarten book baggie. The fourth-graders are required to read for 40 minutes a day, but Johnny's teacher and I have agreed that the requirement is silly in Johnny's case. He reads far more than 40 minutes every day, so we try to mix things up a bit for him. Reading aloud to Evie also helps him work on his speech. He's still having trouble with R's.
We've had a lot of ups and downs with Johnny in school, but I'm happy to say we're on an upswing now. With help from his teacher, the school psychologist, the Consulate's doctor and the State Department's regional psychiatrist we've finally started down a path that might give us some answers about some of Johnny's behavior. I plan to use the time we'll have back in Washington to figure it out further. Wish us luck!
