A day at the theater

When we learned we were coming to London, I really wanted to take Johnny and Evie to see The Lion King. Our first plan was to go as a family, but it turns out that Samuel's not allowed in the theater because he's too young. John offered to spend the day with Samuel so I could take the older two to the theater for a matinee performance. He's a wonderful man.

John and Samuel spent the day at the Sherlock Holmes museum near our apartment, but I'll let John fill you in on that later.

The older kids and I went to the theater early to pick up our tickets, which were waiting at the box office. On the way we passed by the London Transport Museum. Looks cool. Maybe we'll add it to our list of things to see.

Here's Johnny with the Lyceum Theatre in the background. Evie's not in any of these pictures, because she was in one of her odd moods. Sometimes she decides she's too shy to be in photos.

After we picked up our tickets, we headed to nearby Covent Garden for some exploration and some lunch. We stopped at a sweets stall to get little bags of mixed sweets. Johnny's was heavy on chocolate, while Evie decided to try a variety of things. Mine was an equal mix of chocolate and black licorice. Mmmmmm ... black licorice ...

Then we stopped in a toy shop that had all kinds of vintage toys, including these cool cutout puppet theaters. They also had miniature doll house sets that Evie and I admired for quite a while.

We ate a very Britsh lunch at the Punch & Judy pub (the section open to kids, of course). Johnny took this picture of me and Evie while we were waiting for our food.

I had Hunter's chicken, which was fabulous. Johnny polished off a steak and chips and then went to work on Evie's leftover bangers and mash. Are all boys so hungry all the time, or is it just Johnny?

We still had a little time after lunch, so we walked around Covent Garden some more and watched the street performers. We don't have a photo of Johnny's favorite, one of those guys who pretends to be a statue but then moves unexpectedly. There were also jugglers, "speed" artists, a flea circus, magicians, and acrobats.

Then we went back to the theater to see the show, which was excellent! It wasn't that the script or acting were anything special. It's basically the movie on stage, with some extra music thrown in, but the artistry of it was incredible. The mixture of puppetry and dance was really beautiful. We all loved it.

I was a little worried about Evie, who put her hands over her ears and seemed a little nervous, but she was enthralled. It was just a bit loud for her, I think. Johnny was fascinated by the sets and special effects. He kept asking me (in a rather loud voice) how they did things.

It was so fun! I was really glad I'd done it. I've always loved live theater, and it was fun to see the kids enjoying it so much, too. I've got two more plays coming: Henry V at Shakespeare's Globe and Noises Off. I'm going to those with grown-ups, so it was great to have the kid experience, too.
