Sugar rush

The kids invited some friends over to decorate cookies today. Most of the damage was done before I thought to bring out the camera.

Here are some of the cookie artists. The big boys had gone outside by this time, so Evie and company had free reign over frosting and sprinkles. They had a lot of fun squeezing the frosting out of plastic bags, cake decorating style.

I have the easiest, best sugar cookie recipe ever, so I thought I'd share it here. My mom says it came from Aunt Millie, but I asked Aunt Millie once and she didn't remember it. So the recipe has mysterious origins (dum, dum, dum ...). It's super easy because you don't need to chill the dough, and it's super tasty because it's full of butter. If you roll it out thick, the cookies are soft and incredibly addicting.

Sugar Cookies

1 pound butter
2 cups sugar
3 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla
6 to 7 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 teaspoon salt

Beat butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs and vanilla and mix well. Add dry ingredients to form dough. Roll out 1/4 inch thick and cut. Bake at 375 F until edges are just brown.

Buttercream icing (origin not mysterious ... it's from my mom)

2/3 cup butter
1 pound powdered sugar

Beat in powdered sugar a bit at a time. Then add:

1 teaspoon vanilla
2 or 3 tablespoons milk

Beat until of spreading consistency.
