Thanksgiving 2012

There are two holidays that make me really homesick: the Fourth of July and Thanksgiving. Independence Day just isn't the same without picnics and pancake breakfasts and fireworks, no matter what embassy communities try to come up with to take their place.

Thanksgiving is tough because the focus is on family and food. We're far from extended family, so far that it's even difficult to call at a reasonable time of day, and there are some foods that India just doesn't do.

Last year I told you about our not-very-tasty locally found turkey. This year we forked over I'm embarrassed to say how much for an imported frozen turkey. I have no idea where it came from -- all text on the wrapping was in Spanish, which is probably the last language I would have predicted for our neck of the woods -- but this year's bird was absolutely delicious! (Insert sound of trumpets blaring.) I can't believe what a difference a simple thing like the taste of the turkey makes. We had a delicious dinner and a couple of days of real turkey sandwiches and an awesome homemade turkey soup.

Things felt much more heartwarming and ... Thanksgiving-y ... this time around. I'm chalking a lot of it up to the turkey, but it also has a lot to do with good friends and a grateful attitude. It was fun to go around the table and talk about our blessings. I about cried when Joseph said he's thankful that he gets to come and spend his days with Samuel.

I didn't take very many pictures this year, but here are a couple. Evie was my souschef in the construction of apple pie.

She did so much crumbling of the crumble topping that it ended up more of a dough, but it still tasted delicious.

Here we are about to taste Evie's pie with some Baskin Robbins ice cream. Gopal and Joseph ate with us, as did our good friends Cheryl and Suyash. It was a great day!
