You probably haven't seen enough of the Taj Mahal on this blog ... ahem ... so I thought I'd give you more. Woot!
After our little shopping expedition, we decided to sit across the river from the Taj Mahal to watch the sun set. The Mehtab Bagh gardens are directly across the Yamuna from the mausoleum and were originally meant to be part of the Taj complex. They've been restored fairly recently.
You have to drive through the winding craziness that is Agra's old city to get there, but it was definitely worth the trouble. It was a lovely, peaceful spot (in spite of the large number of tourists who had the same idea we did).
I went a little crazy with the camera, so bear with me ...
The other Amy and Cheryl walking along some ruins ...
We had to be sneaky with Flat Stanley on the Taj grounds, but he's free to be at the Mehtab Bagh ...
Cheryl, Amy and Kristin taking it in ...
Some local girls walking along the river bank ... The girl in yellow is carrying patties of dried cow dung that will be used for fuel.
Funny story: When we got to the park we took a side path down to the river and didn't see any signs or warnings or anything like that. So then when we left, we climbed over some old foundations and things and walked past this sign ...
Kristina and I started looking around and saying things like "What ancient excavations? That would be cool to see. Where are they?" Then we turned around. Oh, yeah. The ancient excavations everyone's been climbing all over and sitting on to watch the sunset (including us, of course). Ha!
That was our farewell to Agra. The next morning, we were up early and on the BRAND NEW, amazingly awesome highway back to New Delhi by 8:30. It used to take over five hours to drive between Delhi and Agra, but we were sitting down to an early lunch in downtown Delhi by 11:45. Amazing!
We said good-bye to Kristina in Delhi and the rest of us hopped a late afternoon flight to Chennai. Home, sweet home!
